When your human life slows down…

When your human life slows down and closes in on its last days, is there any good reason to feel hopeful?

In our culture, approaching death is typically viewed as “hopeless.” In other words, being hopeful is only appropriate if your body has a chance to live on.

I strongly disagree with this cultural view. Hope can be relevant and supportive even when your earthly days are numbered. Here’s why.

Hope is a spiritual quality that automatically generates peace. And peace is super helpful for the mind and body at the end-of-human-life. A peaceful mind expresses itself more freely and intimately to loved ones. A peaceful body reduces discomfort, lightens, and quiets.

So - during your last weeks, days, and hours - fill yourself with hope. Create that familiar feeling of eager anticipation and expectation. Remember how hope motivates and inspires you. Allow that feeling to enter and circulate.

In this case, you are using hope as a bridge to peace. Instead of hoping for a full recovery, your hope prepares you for the transition.
